When people think of skiing in Switzerland, they usually picture the classics like Zermatt, St. Moritz or Verbier. Earlier this year, COZY advisor Mary Wood joined our partners at MJL Select for a fam trip and uncovered a quieter side of the country. She found hidden slopes, local favorites and a smooth balance of adventure and calm.
We sat down with Mary to hear about her journey through Graubünden’s secret ski spots.

Switzerland has no shortage of well known ski resorts. What made this trip special for you?
Mary: It felt authentic and very under the radar. We explored Arosa Lenzerheide and Laax which are places where the Swiss go to ski. It felt less crowded and more connected to the local rhythm. Every moment felt like we were discovering something only locals know about.
Tell us about Arosa Lenzerheide. What stood out?
Mary: It had so much alpine charm. You wind up scenic roads that pass farms and small villages, then arrive in Lenzerheide where church bells echo across a frozen lake. The skiing was amazing with about 140 miles of slopes but the experience was more than that. They have night skiing, tobogganing under the stars, and a snowcat ride at night which was such a fun surprise.

Where did you stay and was it COZY approved?
Mary: Absolutely. We stayed at Valbella Resort which felt like a hidden gem. It has a classic Swiss look and sits right at the base of a lift. The spa, the regional food, and even a kids club connected to Lego made it feel thoughtful and welcoming. You feel tucked away but still have everything you need.

Then you moved on to Laax which has a totally different vibe?
Mary: Laax brings a playful and modern energy. It is known as Europe’s freestyle capital and you feel that everywhere. There are snowparks, the world’s largest halfpipe, and the indoor Freestyle Academy with trampolines and skateboarding. It felt young and vibrant, almost like a touch of SoCal in the Alps. Everything is ski in and ski out which made the whole stay very cozy.

Where would you recommend staying in Laax?
Mary: Laax does ski in and ski out very well and there are great options for different styles. Rocksresort is sleek and modern which is ideal if you like a minimalist look with everything at your doorstep. Riders Hotel has a cool and relaxed atmosphere which fits anyone into the freestyle scene or looking for a social setting. Signinahotel is a bit more classic but still right in the heart of everything. All three are steps from the gondola with restaurants and bars all around so you are fully immersed in the Laax feel no matter which one you choose.

You ended the trip at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. How did that wrap things up?
Mary: It was the perfect finale. After days on the slopes, walking into Bad Ragaz felt like a deep exhale. The thermal baths are legendary. The water comes from the Tamina Gorge and has been known for its healing qualities since the thirteenth century. The hotel is beautiful with an incredible spa, Michelin starred dining, and views that feel like a fairy tale. It is luxurious in a calm and grounded way.

Any hidden highlights you would pass on to future travelers?
Mary: Try Swiss wine. It is excellent but rarely exported so people do not talk about it. And take your time between destinations. Whether you drive or take the train, the journey is part of the experience with lakes, mountains, and small villages along the way.

If you had to sum up the feeling of this trip, what would you say?
Mary: Effortless discovery. Every place felt welcoming and genuine with the right balance of adventure and relaxation.
